Hello:
Welcome to the blog for Thompson Street Comics. This is an informal discussion board for comic books, movies, graphic novels and science fiction and fantasy. We’ll also be posting our weekly recomendations here for outstanding comics and graphic novels. I’ve posted some recent favorites below:
Soon I Will Be Invincible, by Austin Grossman, is an entertaining and clever novel about superheroes and supervillains. The story, as told in a first person narrative by evil genius extraordinaire Dr. Impossible, concerns his attempts to defeat his archenemy, the superhero Corefire. Along the way we are treated to a lecture on how to have a super fight, and learn that Dr. Impossible would rather die than be captured in Jeans and a T-shirt. (He carries his evil villain suit with him in a duffel bag.) We also learn about Dr. Impossible’s past history with Corefire and his super team the Champions. (As it turns out all of them went to college together, and Dr. Impossible was the nerd they ignored. The moment when Dr. Impossible reveals his idenity to the Champions after defeating them in battle is priceless. They don’t remember him at all.)
Don’t be fooled, though. Soon I Will Be Invincible is more than just a one-joke novel. It’s suffused with a sense melancholy and regret as Dr. Impossible chronicles a past full of sacrifices mistaken choices. After all, it’s not easy being the greatest supervillian of all time.
Also be sure to check out Local, written by Brian Wood and illustrated by Ryan Kelly. The story concerns a young girl’s spiritual journey as she spends a year traveling across North America. The illustrations are stunning.
I’ve recently discovered The Sword, written by the Luna Brothers. The story concernes the adventures of a wheel chair bound art student after she finds a magic sword. The sword gives her super human powers as long as she holds it. My inner twelve year old ran wild while reading this one.
